theres not a T/B gasket there but im not sure it will need replacing unless its damaged/perished

not 1,not 2,but 3 bolts sheered off and just left in situ,no doubt by the garage who did the chains for the previous owner

Proper shoddy work who ever left the engine like that. Does make you wonder what sort of people can take such little pride in the work they are doing.

no mate.
on further investigation there was no oil leakage from the top cover,so wishful thinking that was the cause

just ordered egr blanking plate + cheater see if that helps

put standard intake and throttle body on,new MAP sensor and fitted blanking plate and cheater.
made no difference and EML light is on permanently
seems as though the noise is getting louder and coming from front of the car.
checked the manifold and cant see any cracks.
could it be possible that the cat is knackered
also 160 mile to half tank of fuel,which is crap!

fault code is P0405 so looks like the cheater I bought isn't doing the job. @Matt

160 to half tank is normal after nearly 8 years of ownership. Pre cat or cat could have failed? But wouldn't explain the smoke. You loosing any water?

Also, did you reset the ECU to make sure it cleared any stored fault codes?

normally get 200 miles to half tank,not loosing any water mate.

disconnected the battery whilst I changed all the stuff over,but there wasn't any previous codes stored.
